The Wentworth by the Sea Hotel & Spa has stood as a beacon of elegance since 1874. This historic gem is a premier destination for meetings, conferences, and romantic weddings, while hosting many social, business, and political leaders from around the globe. After escaping demolition, it reopened in time for the 100th anniversary of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty, which helped end the Russo-Japanese War. The Treaty was signed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1905. But the armistice that ended the actual fighting was negotiated and signed at our historic Portsmouth hotel, where many of the pivotal meetings and back channel diplomacy took place and earned President Theodore Roosevelt the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize.
